From Spikes to Spindles
In this wonderfully raw portrait of New York's Chinatown, residents across New York band together to protest police brutality and greedy real estate developers. From Spikes to Spindles charts this coalition of young and old, Caucasian and Asian, as they march, confront city officials, and attempt to fight the physical and emotional dismantling of a community. In their interactions with city officials, there is an interesting historical perspective on ideas of urban life and civic relations. Also explored are the beginnings of issues that shape contemporary experience -- gentrification, shifting notions of community, and the abuse of power by a police force charged with cleaning up the city. Exquisitely shot (Chinatown has never looked more grittily beautiful), this film has a lot to offer urban residents.~ Brian Whitener, All Movie Guide
