SALES In contrast to many European countries' twice-yearly sales, in New York sales are a way of life. Those Calvin Klein jeans or Donna Karan blouse or fancy underwear can almost always be found somewhere else cheaper. Department stores have sales and savings every day; sorting out the many offers and deals can be a challenge. Check department store prices—they usually advertise these items in the big English-language daily newspapers—then consider visiting stores such as Filene's Basement, T.J. Maxx, Century 21 and O.M.G. After all, when you get home, no one will know where you bought it! Frequently, sales are an illusion: the prices advertised as 25% off are actually permanently 25% off, or reduced from a "list price" so high that no one would ever pay. Remember that in New York you will pay 8.375% sales tax in addition to the printed price on an item.
BARGAINS You can find big bargains at New York City's electronics stores, but you can also get ripped off. As in Hong Kong, the best prices probably aren't as good as they seem. You can almost always find a better Internet price. Do your research before you arrive in New York, and do not settle for a substitute model if the store tells you the item you want is "out of stock". More tips HERE.
